UFC 149: Takes over Calgary with a stacked Canadian card
Written By Jordan Maskell
The first UFC event in Calgary, Alberta, Canada will happen this Saturday night. The event, scheduled to take place at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, will be headlined by an Interim Bantamweight title bout between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao. A slew of injuries has plagued the July 21st event, with names including Michael Bisping, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria, and Thiago Alves having to be pulled, and the card being rescheduled multiple times.
The third fight between Faber and current Bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz, originally set for UFC 148, was moved to the card until Cruz had to withdraw as well due to a knee injury. Therefore an interim belt was created. Faber is coming off a “submission of the night” win over Brian Bowles at UFC 139, while Barao has had 29 fights without a loss.
UFC 149 will also feature the promotional debut of Middleweight Hector Lombard. Lombard is currently on a 20-fight win streak since drawing with Kyle Noke in 2007. The former Bellator, CFC, and AFC Middleweight champion will face Tim Boetsch, who’s original opponent Bisping, had to withdraw due to injury. Many consider Lombard to be a legitimate contender for Anderson Silva’s Middleweight title and see this bout as a title eliminator. Boetsch is on a three-fight win streak himself, getting a come-from-behind third round TKO victory over Yushin Okami at UFC 144.
In Heavyweight action, Check Kongo will take on Shawn Jordan, who steps in for an injured Nogueria. Kongo is coming off a TKO loss to Mark Hunt at UFC 144 in Japan while Jordan is looking for his second straight win in Octagon since winning his UFC debut against Oli Thompson by TKO.
Also on the card, Brian Ebersole will be replacing an injured Claude Patrick to take on James Head in a Welterweight matchup. Ebersole is currently undefeated in his UFC career, winning all four of his fights for the company. Head made his Welterweight debut at the UFC on Fuel TV in Sweden, submitting Papy Abedi by rear naked choke in the very first round.
Canadian Chris Clements will appear on the main card as he faces Matt Riddle in a Welterweight bout. Clements is on a five fight win streak, winning his UFC debut at UFC 145 while Riddle won his last fight at UFC 143. Both men won their last fights via split decision.
A number of talented Canadian fighters will be featured on the preliminary card of UFC 149. The prelims available on FX, will see Light Heavyweight Ryan Jimmo make his UFC debut against Anthony Perosh, Court McGee takes on Nick Ring in a Middleweight contest, and two Bantamweight bouts as Roland Delrome is set to face Fransico Rivera and Bryan Caraway meets Mitch Gagnon.
On the prelims available on Facebook, Featherweight Antonio Caravalo takes on Daniel Pineda, while Lightweight Mitch Clarke faces Anton Kuivanen.
